AI agents for independent retail shops

An agent can check vendor deliveries, flag recalled stock, draft price changes and markdown lists, and write the weekly "new in" post, with the owner deciding every price.

Day to day

An independent shop runs on a till, a stockroom and an owner who is also the buyer. Associates greet customers, ring up sales, restock shelves and watch the floor. The owner picks vendors, places opening orders and reorders, often through wholesale marketplaces, and keeps track of purchases, sales, cash and the staff schedule.

The paperwork piles up behind the counter. Boxes arrive and get counted against a packing slip, if anyone has time. Vendor price lists change and the shelf tags do not. Special orders and holds live on sticky notes. The POS says six of an item and the shelf has two. The newsletter about what just came in keeps slipping to next week, and the schedule gets built on Sunday night from a stack of texts.

What an agent can take on

An agent works from the shop's own POS, receiving log and vendor records, and hands the owner a draft to check.

  • Checks each vendor delivery against the purchase order and drafts the shortage or damage claim for the owner to send.
  • Picks a small weekly cycle count and explains where the counts differ, without ever writing a count into the system.
  • Watches CPSC recall notices against what is on the shelves and what was sold, and flags any match.
  • Turns vendor cost changes into a price-change list and new shelf tags, so the POS and the shelf agree.
  • Lists slow and aging stock with the cash tied up in it and proposes markdowns.
  • Writes the "new in the shop" post and newsletter from the week's receiving log.
  • Drafts next week's floor schedule from staff availability and busy hours.

What stays with people

Prices and markdowns are the owner's call, and so are which vendor to claim against and what to accept. The agent never adjusts inventory, never publishes a schedule (a person does, and checks any local scheduling rules) and never speaks for the shop to a customer until the owner has approved the wording. Shrink reports describe items and counts, never a person. Card numbers do not pass through the agent, and cash counts are checked by people. Marketing email follows CAN-SPAM, including a working opt-out. Everything stays in the shop's own POS and accounting systems, and the owner signs off before anything reaches a customer, a vendor or the books.
