When a business completes your internship, it can keep you on a monthly retainer through us. You work for it as our independent contractor, not as an employee. It is a chance, not a promise: it lasts as long as the business keeps it.
Accept the offer
- We email you when the business keeps you on. The offer also shows on "Internship" and under "Retainers" in your menu.
- Read the Contractor Agreement.
- Tick "I have read the Contractor Agreement and accept it."
- Press "Accept".
The retainer starts when the business pays the first month; we email you then. You may hold up to 4 retainers at a time, and you can decline any offer by not accepting it.
Log your hours
On the retainer's page, under "Log hours":
- Pick the "Day" you worked (today or the last 31 days).
- Enter the "Hours", like 1.5.
- Say "What you did" in a line the owner will read.
- Press "Log the hours".
A retainer includes up to 30 hours a month, and you can log at most 12 hours on one day across all your retainers. Hours do not roll over. The owner sees your log, and it goes into their monthly statement.
Correct an entry
The log is never edited or deleted; a correction is added under the entry instead. While the month is running and before its statement has gone to the business:
- Under the entry in the "Hours log", open "Correct".
- Enter the "Right hours" for that entry (0 removes it).
- Say "Why you are correcting it".
- Press "Save the correction".
The entry then shows its corrected hours, with "Corrected from" the old value "to" the new one and your note; the owner sees the same. You can correct an entry again; each correction is kept. The month's and the day's limits apply to the corrected totals. After the month's statement has gone out, or if you are no longer on the retainer, ask us: the admin can correct any entry, with a reason both sides read.
Requests
The owner raises requests on the retainer page: urgent, a new automation, or a question. You are emailed each one. Choose "Acknowledged: I am on it" or "Done" and press "Save", with a reply. For a new automation, reply with a scope note: what you will build, the hours it takes, and what you need. An urgent request nobody acknowledges within 4 hours also goes to the backup intern and to us.
About once a quarter, write "What to automate next" for the business. The owner reads it on their page.
Getting paid
For each month the business pays, we pay you 80% of the fee ($750 a month at today's rate), by hand, by bank transfer or PayPal. We email you when your share is recorded; reply with your payment details. You are responsible for your own tax, and we may ask for a form first, such as a W-8BEN if you are not a US person.
Your earnings
Once you hold a retainer, "Earnings" appears in your menu (it is also linked from "Retainers" and from "Your account"). The page shows:
- "Pending" and "Paid": the totals of your shares. A void share counts toward neither.
- "By month": one row per paid retainer month, with the business, the month, the hours you logged that month (corrections included), your share and its status: "Pending", "Paid on" and the date, or "Void" with the reason.
A share stays yours if you are later replaced on that retainer. If no business has paid a month yet, the page says so.
If a month stays unpaid for 7 days, the retainer pauses: stop work, and the agent's tokens are switched off until it is paid.
The bench
We may ask you to join our bench. A bench intern can be the backup on someone else's retainer: you can read it and its agent's activity, and urgent requests nobody acknowledged come to you.
If you are replaced, or replace someone
If we move a retainer to another intern, everyone is emailed and the departing intern's agent tokens are revoked. The new intern accepts the Contractor Agreement on the retainer page before logging hours; the owner then issues their agent a new token.
